New Partnership: Surgery Hero and One Wirral CIC

Surgery Hero is thrilled to announce our new partnership with One Wirral CIC, collaborating on the Diabetes Prehabilitation Programme. This partnership marks a significant step forward in enhancing the quality of care for people living with type 2 diabetes who are awaiting surgery.

At Surgery Hero, our coaches understand that managing your health while living with diabetes can be challenging. And that adding surgery to the mix can make it feel even more overwhelming.  That’s why it’s all the more important to feel in control and prepared when the day of your operation comes.

Keep reading to find out more about our exciting new programme and how we can support you and your health.

Your surgery and living with Diabetes

In the UK, 15% of all operative procedures are performed on individuals living with diabetes.  But if you’re someone living with diabetes then preparing for surgery isn’t always a quick checklist. There is often a lot more to consider before the day comes.

Often, people living with diabetes experience lengthier stays in hospital, and higher rates of postoperative complications. Issues faced can include wound complications, an increased risk of infections, and cardiovascular complications. In particular, uncontrolled blood sugar levels can impact healing and lead to a slower recovery.

Focusing on lifestyle changes such as managing your weight, eating a balanced diet, staying active, and reducing alcohol consumption can reduce the risk of complications and help manage your long-term health.

The good news is that Surgery Hero is dedicated to helping you take control of your health and make healthy lifestyle changes that you can maintain long after your operation!

How can your Surgery Hero coach support you?

Your Health Coach can help you navigate the complexities of diabetes management. Through a combination of 1:1 sessions and our in-app learning resources, the programme will support you to set and achieve realistic goals that will have a long-term, positive impact on your health.

Many of our past members have stated that health coaching was the spark they needed to ignite their motivation and set them on the path to success!!

Your Health Coach can support you with:

  • Setting achievable nutrition, physical activity, sleep and stress goals
  • Building on your knowledge of diabetes management through a group learning environment
  • Problem solving and planning for when challenges and barriers arise
  • Boosting your confidence and motivation to manage your long-term health
  • A supportive, listening ear when you need it most

Charlotte is a health coach at Surgery Hero, and often works with members on the programme who are focussing on managing their long term health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes.

“The members I speak to find having the space and time to talk in coaching sessions really helpful. Often for my members living with diabetes, conversations can revolve around what the next steps might look like to help them feel more in control of managing their condition.”

The Surgery Hero programme typically runs over 12 weeks or up to 4 weeks post op. Throughout the programme you will have access to your own, personal Health Coach who will work with you 1:1 via weekly phone or video calls.

Charlotte shared with us her recent experience of working with one of her members, Linda, who was given a target for her HBa1c level before she could be ready for surgery:

“I had a really nice experience working with a member who would use the in-app food diary to help stay on top of her eating habits. She has set and achieved some fantastic goals focussing on healthy switches within her current eating habits, like switching from simple carbohydrate foods to complex carbohydrates.

She found filling in the food diary and reflecting on it during our calls a great way to build awareness of how this could be affecting her blood sugar. It was a great motivator for her to keep up with the goals she set, and it was amazing to see her grow in confidence from my perspective. In turn, this has helped her reduce her HBa1c levels to be ready for surgery”

We’re proud to be able to share Linda’s story and spread the word on the benefits of our Diabetes Prehabilitation Programme. But we don’t want anyone to miss out on the opportunity.
